Grade Level: Pre-k / K
Rating:
Synopis:
After students look for insects and bugs on a short nature walk outdoors, they assemble a My Favorite Bug snack.
Activity Objectives:
Students will be able to:
- Talk about bugs and insects they saw on their nature walk
- Use right-to-left sequencing to assemble a My Favorite Bug snack
- Taste their My Favorite Bug snack
Material and Advance Prep:
What to Do:
- Optional: Introduce the topic of bugs by reading aloud the Oddhopper Opera: A Bug's Garden of Verses.
- Tell students that the class is going on a "bug safari" in the schoolyard. Ask students what they think a "bug
safari" is. Continue by asking students if they have looked for bugs outside at home and if they can name a few insects
or bugs they've seen. Point out that there are many insects in the world. We don't want to hurt insects, because most insects are helpers.
- Take students outside. Give them time to examine the grass, flowers and ground for insects. When an insect is spotted, use the magnifying glass for students to get a good look at it.
- Back in the classroom, talk about the bugs that students saw. Then invite students to make a special recipe called My Favorite Bug.
- Demonstrate how to assemble My Favorite Bug. Role model "trying a new food" by tasting it in front of the students.
- In groups of 4 or 5, have students wash their hands and assemble their bug. Repeat the demonstration until everyone has made a snack.
- Add My Favorite Bug to the Tasting Chart. Take a tasting survey. Have the children help count and record the results.
- Stamp the Tasting Passport for children who tasted their snack.
- Optional: Send home the Food Matters Family Newsletter.
