Name the Food Group Sandwich

Grade Level: Primary

Ms. Kara Sherfick, teacher at the North Madison Elementary School in Camby, Indiana, has students build construction paper sandwiches after they learn about the Five Food Groups. Afterwards, they complete a writing activity describing their sandwich and how to make it. Use this activity to extend the concepts taught in Little D's Nutrition Expedition™.

What You Need
• 2 bread, 1 tomato, ham, lettuce and cheese template per student.
• 5-inch paper plate per student
• Scissors - 1 pair per student
• Glue
• Stapler

What to Do
1. Download the "Name that Food Group Sandwich" blackline masters.

2. Reproduce copies on colored paper to correspond with each template, e.g. brown for bread, yellow for cheese, etc.

3. Distribute uncut sandwich pieces and a paper plate to each child.

4. Label each sandwich piece according to the correct food group.

5. Have students cut out sandwich pieces and build their sandwich.

6. When the sandwich is complete, staple at the top to keep the pieces together.

7. Attach sandwich to the paper plate by gluing the bottom piece of bread to the plate.

8. Complete one of the following:

   a. Pretend you are a chef for the Royal Food Family. Describe your sandwich, how to make it, and why it is good for Little D the Five Food Group Dragon.

   b. Write an acrostic poem using the words nutrition, health or Little D the Dragon.

"Many of the students cut a small bite out of the sandwich so it looks like someone bit into it!"
- Kara Sherfick
