Little D, Breakfast, and the Learning Edge

What does breakfast have to do with learning?
A lot, according to the research! National studies show that breakfast eaters are better able to concentrate and learn, have fewer behavioral problems, and have higher academic and standardized test performance. Help your students reach their academic potential by encouraging them to eat breakfast every day and using Little D's Nutrition Expedition™ to arm them with the information they need to choose a nutritious breakfast.

Here's how:

Encourage Breakfast Every Day — Not just on test day! And, make sure students have a solid foundation for making nutritious choices. Introduce the Five Food Groups with Little D's Meet the Royal Food Family, Activity 1, then teach about each Food Group with activities such as Sir Milkford and Lady Holly's Milk Group, Activity 2 and Prince Waffle's Grain Group, Activity 6. Put it all together and solve nutrition challenges with Little D's Healthfully Ever After, Activity 10.

Connect with the Cafeteria — Invite your school nutrition professional to talk about school breakfast during National School Breakfast Week, March 5-9, or have a School Breakfast Foods Tasting as part of a lesson. Also, discuss opportunities to tie Little D's Nutrition Expedition lessons to this year's theme, "A World of School Breakfast," such as decorating the menus or cafeteria using characters found in Little D's Downloadable Materials. Find more suggestions for connecting cafeteria and classroom learning on page 7 in Little D's Nutrition Expedition Nutrition Backgrounder.
