AFHK Web Cast Offers Insights for Creating Healthier Schools
"Healthy kids need healthy schools." That was the message of the Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) Call to Leadership: Elevating School Wellness to a Higher Level live Web cast aired on 12/08/08. A panel of distinguished experts, including former U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. David Satcher, offered insights on how schools can overcome obstacles to providing quality nutrition and adequate physical activity, and created healthier learning environments. School Nutrition Association National Nutrition Standards
The School Nutrition Association has released their National Nutrition Standards recommendations. They call for schools to offer and promote foods & beverages consistent with the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) and the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI). In addition they propose that federal standards will pre-empt state standards for all foods and beverages served during the school day throughout the campus.
